The following is an overview for treating pigeons with Avitrol Whole Corn.

As with all pesticides "Always Read and Follow Label Directions and Precautions and Follow Local and Federal Law and Regulations.

SURVEY THE SITE

The survey provides the necessary information to properly perform a bird control project. During the survey you will identify:

    1. The species which are causing the problem.
    2. The nature and extent of the problem.
    3. What the birds are doing and where they are going.
    4. The number of pest birds.
    5. The existence and numbers of desirable or protected species of birds or other animals which may be affected by the project.
    6. The type of control procedures or techniques which might be most effective and acceptable.

Using Avitrol

Avitrol Whole Corn for Pigeons EPA Reg. Number 11649-7, is a treated corn bait which will induce flock alarming reactions from affected birds. The reactions of the affected birds will frighten the remainder of the flock. If the birds have been prebaited, as discussed below, the flock will associate the alarm reactions with the area and leave. If the birds have not been properly prebaited, the flock will associate the alarm reactions with the bait. They will stop feeding and will not leave the site. This is why prebaiting is so important.

NOTE: Avitrol will always cause some mortality.

If your survey indicates that Avitrol should be used, proceed as follows:

    1. Read and follow label directions.
    2. Select baiting sites which can safely be used without exposing children or affecting desirable species of animals. Pigeons will readily feed on roof tops. Roof tops may provide safe and isolated feeding locations.
    3. Prebait with untreated whole corn until at least 50% of the flock is eating. Note: One hundred (100) pigeons will consume between 7.5 and 10 pounds of whole corn per day. This will assist in determining the level of bait acceptance which you have achieved.
    4. Avitrol works by affecting only a few birds, causing them to react and frighten the remainder of the flock. Once you have good bait acceptance with untreated bait, you must determine the blend ratio which you will use. The blend ratio which you choose will affect the level of resulting mortality. (Please see Avitrol Questions and Answers, FAQ)
    5. Once you have chosen a blend ratio, blend your bait and begin the baiting process. It is usually best to make your initial placements early in the morning. (Please see Avitrol Questions and Answers, FAQ)
    6. Because of the mode of action of the Avitrol baits, Avitrol blended baits may be picked up after a few hours or at the end of the day and replaced with untreated prebait until the birds, if any remain, are again feeding heavily, when the treated bait may be reintroduced. This will prevent continually having dead birds at the site.
    7. Once you have obtained a satisfactory level of control, discontinue baiting and prebaiting and monitor the site for reinfestation.
